Escape from the "Red Star"

(Autobiography of Rudolph F. Papp)

After three months or so, I was pulled out of solitary in Novi Sad. No sooner was I out, white like a corpse from lack of sunlight and smelling like a fish, I was drafted to join the Penitentiary Army as further punishment for my political activism against Tito's Communist Regime; I immediately had to board a train which had been specifically made to transport livestock and I ended up in the small city of Resen near Lake Prespa. I received my commando training at the borders between Albania, Greece and Macedonia.
If you wish to know more about my journey from Novi Sad to Resen, you can email me to find out how to get it.

After seven months of hard training in commando skills, tactics and warfare (some of which even involved hand-to-hand combat), which I completed with excellent results, I became the Commanding Officer of a group of seven commandos. The eight of us had to perform lots of dangerous missions in enemy territory which were full of such horror and anxiety as to challenge any Stephen King novel. If you are interested in learning more about these missions, you may email me to find out how to obtain this information. I'm sure that you will not be dissapointed with my stories about commando life; make sure that you also ask for the Christmas Story.

These photographs show some of my happier times during my stay with the Penitentiary Army during those rare moments when I was allowed to leave and go in the city to carouse. These occasions usually ended up with me brawling at the local bars or on the streets with guys whose girls I had been trying to seduce. After such a wild night out, I often awoke with a major hangover, confined in solitary at the Penitentiary Army. My commotions ran rampant through Resen: chaos followed me everywhere!
